How To Replace Tap Washer

If you find that your taps or shower is running and you are not sure why - it may be because you need to replace the washing machine. This is a task that everyone can do quickly.

A tap washer is a piece of hardware that is used to provide a tight seal when the tap is turned off. There is a normal tap washer (picture above), a fiber washer (a wide disc that usually turns red) and o-ring (s) (small rubber rings), all of which work to ensure a tight seal and prevent water dripping. . When the tap is on - the washing machine is some water that can flow. If you start to have a faucet - then it is a good time to wash the pads on a hot or cold faucet. Even the best washing machines wear out over time - so if you find that your tap is running, don't worry. All you have to do is buy the right size pads and follow the steps below and you can replace the pads quickly.

1. Switch off the main water supply

The first thing you want to do is turn off the water main at the water meter. Make sure your using the washing machine or dishwasher or that no one is showering. After turning off the water main, you can open an outside hose tap or bath tap to release water pressure. This will work tohelp drain any remaining water still in the pipes so that you do not get wet more than necessary.

2. Remove the tap

Instead of finding out if your cause is hot or cold - it's usually worth the effort to turn them both on at once. Each faucet is different, but your typical faucets have small top caps that can be screwed on by hand, so you can remove the handle yourself and unscrew the hood / screen (the dome element is located at the base of the faucet). The spindle is another piece that needs to be removed, and you will need the help of a tensioner to remove this piece.

3. Replacing  O rings

After removing the spindle, you can remove the first remove the red fiber washer - Then turn the spinndel to turn the tap off, to seperate the spinndle from the body. This will expose the 9mm black O ring. Remove and replace the o ring and use tap grease to lub the o ring.  Some spindles have one or two O rings.

4. Replacing the tap washer

Washer is visible at the end of the spindle. If your faucet is placed in a vertical sink - then the washer in the insert / hole has removed the spindle.

5. Reassembly

Follow the disassembly steps in reverse.  Turn on the main water and try both taps. Once you are satisfied, you can return the other pieces to the taps and finish them again.
